Why Should You Regularly Trim Your Pets Nails?

Trimming your pets nails on a regular basis is an important part of your grooming tasks. Trimming your pets nails should be done at least once a month, if not more. If you do not trim your pets nails regularly it could end up interfering with their gait. As their nails continued to grow, walking could become awkward, and even painful.

There are several benefits for your pet when you trim their nails regularly:

  • Their toe nails help provide traction for them when they walk or run.
  • Dogs cannot walk correctly if their nails become too long.
  • Untrimmed nails can split causing your pet a lot of pain, bleeding, and a possible trip to your veterinarian.
  • Torn nails can become infected which can result in long term antibiotics or even surgical removal.

How Can You Tell If Their Nails Should Be Cut?

If you hear your pets nails clicking on the floor when they walk, that is usually a good indication that they need to have them trimmed. Take a closer look – hold their foot and gently push on their toe right above their nail…. do they look too long?

Bring your pet into our next clinic and we will help you make sure that your dogs nails are the proper length!
