Volunteer FAQ

“How can I become a OHS Volunteer?”

Volunteers must be at least 15 years old and accompanied by a parent if under age 15 to assist at the facility. We request that our volunteers commit to at least 4 hours per month. All volunteers must complete an  application  and submit a proof of tetanus vaccinations.

There are several volunteer jobs that you can assist with.

“What happens after I submit my application?”

After we receive your completed online application, you will be contacted to get more information such as what area you would like to work in.

All volunteers should be current on tetanus vaccinations and carry health insurance. Please remember that while we take great care to ensure your safety, we are housing animals that are sometimes unpredictable. Good judgment and safe animal handling are a must when volunteering at Owensboro Humane Society.

“I’m in a student group can we do hours at the Humane Society?”

YES!  There are times when QHS can use groups to help with special projects – such as cleaning up around the shelter, landscaping, or food/blanket drives.

When can I volunteer?

The shelter is open to its volunteers from 9am to 5pm seven days a week  These hours are not the adoption hours for the public, but are solely for the convenience of the volunteers.

“I would like to do something for OHS that is not listed on the volunteer programs. Is that ok?”

Absolutely! We have volunteers that help with special projects, take pictures at the shelter, create the website  – the possibilities are endless. If you have a special skill (such as web design, grant writing, or photo editing) we would love to have you as well!
