Choosing a Pet
How do you choose the right pet for you and your family?
Often, individuals purchase a puppy or a kitten impulsively, without taking into account all the essential factors that come with the responsibility of owning a pet. Unfortunately, this leads to thousands of animals being abandoned in shelters across the United States every year.
The Owensboro Humane Society provides guidance to prospective pet owners in selecting the right animal that will complement their lifestyle and personality.
Factors to take into consideration:
- How many hours a day/week do you have to commit to this animal?
- How much money can be spent each month on an animal (food, toys, treats, vet care)?
- How much space do you have available for an animal?
- Does anyone in your family have allergies?
- Are you ready to commit to an animal for several years to come?
- If you already have animals, will that adapt to another animal?
All of these questions that you need to ask yourself before you even consider adopting an animal.
Decide what pet is best for your family:
- Is this animal going to be a child substitute, or is it meant for a child?
- What kind of family are you—active, laid-back, busy, or traveling?
Take your time to do some research. Look up different breeds and start gathering information. There are countless types of dogs, each wonderful in its own right, but they all need a home that matches their lifestyle and can fully incorporate them into the family.
If you have any questions about our animals, please visit the Humane Society today, and we’ll be more than willing to answer any questions and assist you in finding the perfect match. We understand that not every dog or cat is suitable for every person. That’s why we take the time to get to know our animals, ensuring we can find them a better home. We work closely with our animals to determine the best situations for them. Can they handle children? Will they get along with other dogs or cats? Do they need to be the only animal in the home? All of these considerations are taken into account as we pair you with one of our animals. We want both you and the animal to be happy with the new home.
